French Jewish artist and writer Claude Cahun (1894–1954), who was born Lucy Schwob, and her lifelong lover and collaborator Marcel Moore (1892–1972), born Suzanne Malherbe, were pioneers in their bold representations of an unfixed self.
“Show Me as I Want to Be Seen” is a new exhibition that positions their work in dialogue with 10 contemporary artists, including Rhonda Holberton, Gabby Rosenberg, Tschabalala Self, and Isabel Yellin. Some of the work is self-portraits that “return the gaze or employ the trope of the mirror, preferring self-perception and self-determination over the pleasure or comprehension of the viewer.” Curated by Natasha Matteson, the show runs February 7 to July 7, 2019 at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. www.thecjm.org
