Sara Horowitz founded the Freelancers Union in 2001. Fifteen years later, her union has won legislation protecting freelancers against nonpayment in New York City, the first city in the country to have such protections. According to the union website, the Freelancing Isn’t Free Act “requires written contracts for freelance gigs, allows freelancers to file complaints against non and late-paying clients with the Department of Labor Standards, and institutes penalties against clients found guilty of nonpayment in small claims court.” Mazal tov!
