7 Jewish Feminist Highlights of 2020
Let’s face it—2020 has been a clusterf**k of a year, and I can’t wait to see it recede in the distance of my rearview mirror. While most Jews have observed Passover, the High Holidays, and Chanukah virtually, the national COVID fallout from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s is likely to be heartbreaking, even more so given that a vaccine for most of us is just months away. The murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor tragically reminded us that we must continue to fight to make the truth that Black Lives Matter self-evident. And among the many, many hits that democracy took this year was the ramrodding of Amy Coney Barrett into the Supreme Court seat that Ruth Bader Ginsburg honorably and notoriously held from 1993 until her death on erev Rosh Hashanah.

What Amy Coney Barrett Means for Sex Ed
Middle schoolers are not well known for being comfortable and open when it comes to talking about sex. On my college campus at Wesleyan University, I belong to a group of students working to change this. Adolescent Sexual Health Awareness (ASHA) reinvents sex-ed curricula to go deeper than what most states require. Our mission is, in part, to “empower young people to be active participants in their sexual education and to take charge of their bodies, as well as their emotional and physical health.”

7 Jewish Feminist Highlights of 2018
I don’t need to tell readers of Lilith that parts of this year have been soul-crushing for Jewish feminists. In 2018 we mourned those massacred at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, and many of us gnashed our teeth about antisemitism in our own feminist movements.
But Jewish feminist hope, grit, and creative resistance were also part of 2018. As the secular year winds down, let’s remember and celebrate all that has healed and nourished our souls. Here’s my annual list of 7 Jewish feminist highlights (7 being the number associated with creation and blessing in Jewish tradition):

Notorious RBG
This first-ever retrospective exhibition about trailblazing Supreme Court Justice turned-cultural-icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name and created in partnership with its authors, Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik. The exhibition explores the American legal system and civil rights movements through the lens of RBG’s personal experiences and public service. It tells the parallel stories of her remarkable life and her efforts to expand “We the People” to include those long left out of the U.S. Constitution’s promises. A Prayer for RBG’s Long Life —and Our Pursuit of Justice
On February 1, 2018, the pews of the synagogue in Washington, DC were packed. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg —known to some her of her adoring fans at the Notorious RBG — was about to be interviewed at Adas Israel Congregation by the Forward’s editor in chief, Jane Eisner. Rather than introducing the speakers in a traditional way, Kathleen Peratis brought both Eisner and Ginsburg on stage and proceeded to read this prayer. Written by Abigail Pogrebin in response to an invitation from Lilith, it is a paean to the longest-sitting Jewish Supreme Court justice, and an articulation of the hope that she — and her presence on the court — provide.
At a time as disquieting as this,
When so many of us feel deflated, shaken,
worried for our future,
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
When we almost can’t remember what it’s like to go a day without name-calling, without lies, harshness, or callousness.
When we’re nostalgic for those halcyon years of complete sentences, dignified statesmanship, acts of empathy,
We still look to you, Ruth Bader Ginsburg—yeshiva-girl-turned-legendary-justice, RBG icon, fighter for the powerless and wronged.
May you go from strength to strength because you have been ours.
May you live many more years because you make the world brighter, fairer, kinder….Because we need you.
