I, Candy

“I always felt different and I wanted to know why,” begins Candy Kugel, narrating her autobiographical 22-minute film I, Candy in which the process of deconstructing a childhood drawing triggers the artist’s reflections on a personal history with anti-Semitism, political activism and life choices affected by luck and determination. This beautiful film displays an encyclopedic range of animation techniques with remarkable dexterity, and is an engaging and humorous testament to Kugel’s pioneering 45-year career in a field in which very few women worked when she got started. The film premiered at a screening in April at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Watch for news of future screenings at buZZZco.com.
