“We Shall Overcome” for Our Own Complicated Era

Planned Parenthood clinic escort, Hurricane Katrina re-builder, temple officer and lifelong activist Isabel “Liz” Dunst recently visited a Jewish summer camp where the songs sung by campers were all written 50 years earlier. Why, she asked, don’t the young people have new songs to sing that reflect their lives, their dreams and passions? To celebrate a milestone birthday, Dunst sent out a challenge to songwriters asking for the next great social justice songs for this generation. Five of the eight songs selected and recorded are by women artists, including Peri Smilow and Julie Silver. Proceeds from the “Together as One” CD, with its songs about resistance, sanctuary and other themes, benefit the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. togetherasonemusic.com
