Just before Rosh Hashanah, Julia Garner and Rabbi Sherre Hirsch discussed sin, repentance and the darkly compelling Netflix crime series “Ozark” in a Zoom event. They moved from Garner’s riveting, Emmy-winning role as 19-year-old hustler Ruthie Langmore to her growing up in the Riverdale section of the Bronx with an Israeli mother and American father—a far cry from Garner’s “feral but vulnerable” backwoods character. “The first thing you learn as an actor,” Garner told Hersh, is “you don’t judge your character.”
