Grandmothers wield influence and authority; following their advice is a sign of respect and loyalty. If you are lucky, your grandmother is someone you get to know well. If you are a Holocaust survivor’s child, chances are you never met your grandmother. Some communities today have a generation of grandmothers who did not themselves experience having a grandmother.

An Australian exhibition of crowd-sourced intimate photographs show nurturing matriarchs and the joy of relationships removed from the complexities of parenting. From the grandchild’s perspective, these grandparents represent happy outings and unconditional love. At the Sydney Jewish Museum through February 2019.
